Work with me
Oh this is exciting, you actually made it this far! I can't believe it, I really can't. Well since you're here now, here's what the process looks like..
Agreeing on terms and conditions
The main factors are...
- Timeline: We can discuss a timeline convenient to both, where I have enough time to create beautiful art for you, and you have it in time for what you need it for (hopefully something legal).
- Changes: We can agree to how many changes can be requested at each stage. Normally, the later the stage, the less the changes.
- Budget: We will try our best to reach a deal which benifits both of us equally! If I can't live lavishly, I can't draw!
- Royalties: If we are producing a book together, this is a good motivating factor for me to create something amazing for you that will keep succeeding in the long term and reap rewards for us both. And since I consider myself royalty, this works out really really well.
- Rights and Usage: We can define some parameters for how and where you can use the art.
Character Design
This is crucial, because these characters will carry the story! We will refine them till we have them right. I can't be blamed for what they do when the come to life.
Thumbnails
Thumbnails, as their name suggests, are very small! We do them to get a general idea of the action and composition of the pages. Does the story flow well? Is there enough variation? Is the pacing good? We can answer all these questions and more at this stage. This stage is normally the fastest stage. You might need a microscope to look at these.
Pencils
Now I further refine the composition with all the details, but it's still a sketch. It's vital that we agree on everything here as the next stage is inking, which is very difficult to change! This stage is exciting, things are coming alive! You are believing that this can actually happen!
Final Coloured Illustration
Yes we made it! It truly is a magical feeling to go from words to this. At this point we can make some very small edits and colour changes. Hopefully you've enjoyed this process as much as myself. It's time for me to relish in the moment and take a long nap.
The images I've shared here are for the book 'Princess Pru and the Ogre on the Hil', published by Owl Kids and written by Maureen Fergus. This book has been awarded a Blue Spruce award and nominated for Best Book Illustration in the 2024 NCS Reuben Divisional Awards.
Check out what other books I've published so far, this is not all talk!
If you are interested in talking, you can message me, [email protected] or contact me in the form below (If that kinda thing floats your boat).
